1. THE PEOPLE OF KENYA |
These two women have decided to do clothes weaving locally and sells these
clothes locally in the market to assist them with their children's school fees and food. |
Like many other countries of Africa, Kenya consists of many tribes and
dialects. Some of the major tribes in Kenya include the MSASAI, LUO, KIKUYU,
KALENJIN, LUHYAS,KISII,etc and many other sub-tribes. Each tribe is easily
noticed by languange dialect, customs and manners!Tribes in Kenya vary
from one culture and tradition to another.The lifestyle is comletely different
and people speak different languages.The major National languages in Kenya
are Kiswahili and English. Kiswahili is commercially used and it is a common
language for all people. English is also used in offices, schools and is
commonly used by many because Kenya was under British protectorate before
independence.English as an instruction language is used in schools as early
as lower elementery school children to High Schools, Colleges and Universities.Atleast
one must know Kiswahili, English and the vehicular language. The Luo tribes in Kenya settled along the basin of Lake Victoria and most of them are fishermen.The Masai are herds-men and mostly they keep cattles. The Kikuyus are farmers and most of them settled along Mt Kenya. The Kalenjins are farmers and most of them settled in the Great Rift Valley. |
